Making

Read Foundry are classed as a 'Jobbing' Foundry, this means that we are able to make 1 off's and small batch production castings in Aluminium, Bronze or Cast Iron.
We use two different types of sand when making moulds, these are

Dry Silica Sand - which is mixed with a silicate and co2 gas passed through it to make the sand set hard. This sand comes from a quarry in Cheshire, it is a light yellow colour. When we are making a more difficult mould we use this sand, mixing it with a silicate made from sugar cone and when we have made the mould we pass co2 gas through it.

Clay based Sand - which has a water content, this is also known as 'Green Sand', although its colour is actually red. We buy this from a local quarry at Bromsgrove, known as 'Bromsgrove Red Sand'. This sand can be repeatedly used, the colour changing from red to black. After every cast water and new red sand will be added. This is the sand that Tony was using to make the hose pipe protector mould and can be seen in the casting picture opposite.

We only use Analysed ingots LM25, LM6 and LM16 in Aluminium and LG4, PB1 and PB2 in Bronze Alloys. These are both melted on the premises, the Aluminium in an Electric Bailout furnace and an oil fired lift-out furnace for the Bronze alloys. The castings have various finishes according to the customers requirements.

The castings we have made include manifolds, armature fans, chills, local artist projects, model steam train parts, post box fronts, coat hangers, vintage car parts and vintage motorcycle parts, crematory castings, desk brackets and arms, various railing finials, luggage rack brackets and more. We have also made a numbers of projects in bronze, including decorating a local shopping centre with bronze blockpavers, these were designed in clay by local school children. We used their clay models as patterns to produce them in bronze, which we antiqued and waxed so that they would remain untarnished for years. We also make trophies, wind bells, hose pipe protectors, sundials boot scrapers, bird baths, tooling for bottling and labelling machines and boot removers all in bronze. Click here to see more of our products.

Here is a list of other products we have done in the past: -

  • Railing finials for Buckingham Palace
  • Chill castings used in moulds for formula one engines
  • Gate finials for the West Bromwich Albion FC Jeff Astle gate
  • Donated Plaque for Dudley Cenotaph
